I still remember the smell of my mother's kitchen.
Lemongrass simmering on the stove. Jasmine tea steeping in a cracked clay pot. The sound of my grandmother humming while she folded dumplings with hands that knew exactly what they were doing — hands that had fed our family for generations.
When I left Asia and landed in America, I thought I was ready.
I wasn't.
I was a single mom with two kids, a small apartment, and a big, aching longing for everything I had left behind — the food, the smells, the comfort of things that felt like home.
Grocery runs became painful. I'd walk the aisles of big American stores searching for ingredients I grew up with, flavors my children had never tasted, the little things that made me feel less far away from the people I love. Most of the time, I left empty-handed.
So I started doing something small.
